Want To Trade In Your Car or Truck? This Is The Best Time To Get The Most For It

when is the best time of the year to trade in your car to get the most for it?

One of the biggest decisions in the ownership of your current vehicle is knowing “when should I trade the vehicle in?” Is it best to trade it after a specific time frame? Is there such a thing as too many miles? What if it isn’t in flawless condition? It probably should not surprise you to figure out there isn’t an easy answer. Yet, we’ve got a few advice to help you decide when to trade in your car, truck, or SUV.

Is It Time To Trade In My Car?

This is generally the first question vehicle owners consider. Most of us believe the only way to get top dollar for their car is to sell it on their own vs. trading it in. However, there are a few things to think about when attempting to decide if you should trade-in your car or sell it separately.

Selling It Yourself Normally Takes Longer

With few exceptions, selling a vehicle can take many weeks or longer; particularly if your vehicle needs repairs. You would have to take care of every facet of the sale process, from posting an ad to scheduling test drives, to negotiating price, and anything else that pops up. On the other hand, trading in a car generally takes place at the time you buy your new one with little effort.

Paperwork Hassles

Normally the seller is accountable for getting the buyer the required paperwork, such as the title and registration. Trying to do everything alone can be a disheartening and even lengthy process if there are unexpected challenges connected to the paperwork, like a lien. The dealership is equipped to handle all of the paperwork, surprises included.

Tax Benefits

Maybe the most notable benefit of trading in your vehicle is the possible tax savings offered in places with a state sales tax. For these states, there’s a financial credit applied to your new vehicle’s sales tax if you trade in a vehicle at the same location where they buy the new car. Simply, the taxes are applied to the price difference after the trade-in price is figured into the new car sale price. The savings can easily reach hundreds and even thousands of dollars.

When Trading In A Car, What’s The Best Mileage?

There are plenty of thoughts on this, especially since late model vehicles are specifically built to last a long time. Yet, there is general consensus on three mileage milestones to keep in mind when considering trading your car in:

30,000 To 40,000 miles

This is when the majority of new car warranties end. Conversely, this is also when the first major replacement or repairs of ‘wear-and-tear’ parts, like brakes or tires, are usually performed on most cars. Your vehicle depreciation will begin to increase more quickly after this milestone, so the closer your car is to these miles, the better your trade-in value options will usually be.

60k – 70k miles

Depending on usage, a car that gets to this milestone will generally be between 3 to 5 years old and most likely has been well maintained. As the miles add up, the value gets lower so car owners should think about this when considering their trade-in options.

100k Miles Or More

It is true that hitting this milestone isn’t nearly the automotive death notice that it was in years past, thanks in part to modern manufacturing. But, the more mileage a vehicle has, the more the depreciation in all but the most exceptionally kept vehicles. Anything within this milestone could still have value even if it isn’t in pristine condition. The condition of the car is reviewed more closely as the miles increase on that odometer.

Trade Tips

Lastly, a crucial piece of trading in the vehicle is preparation for the trade-in assessment. These ideas are not the only ideas, to be sure, but these steps can help you get the best value out of your trade.

Get It Clean

This should be a no-brainer, but some people think that presenting their car ‘as-is’ is an honest approach to a trade-in evaluation. While we don’t advocate hiding problems or blemishes with the vehicle (FYI, they will see through those attempts anyway), it’s not a bad idea to clean up your car to the best of your ability before bringing it to the dealership. This means removing all debris and trash from inside your car (yes the trunk too), washing and vacuuming the exterior and interior, and maybe even doing a nice exterior and interior detailing. Just think of the appraiser as a potential buyer of the vehicle and tidy up the vehicle accordingly.

Fix or Replace What You Can

We realize that repair bills can be overwhelming, especially for major mechanical problems. But, if you can repair minor dings, defects in the paint, and cracks in the various windshield, mirrors, and windows, all of those fixes will help improve the value of your trade. If possible, we recommend repairing any mechanical concerns the vehicle may have as well. The better the condition, the higher the trade-in value will be.

Know Your Stuff

If you’ve decided trading in your car is the best option for you, then we suggest coming here with all of your car’s paperwork, which includes the title (if you have it), registration, any maintenance documents you have, and keys you have for the vehicle. Come ready to trade-in your vehicle and you will speed up the process of driving away in your new vehicle.
